john Knox JOHN KNOX
JOHN KNOX the most famous of all church figures in Scotland, was born in the early part of the 16th. century (probably 1514) at Haddington. His early years as a Roman priest and his study of the Scriptures convinced him of the errors of that church and its dire need of reformation. From the day of his conversion he was committed to that reform. During his courageous and chequered career he worked tirelessly for reformation of doctrine and practice in the church, particularly focussing on worship, discipline and church order. He was an energetic preacher who 'feared the face of no man'. His sole aim to glorify Christ and hold forth His rights and rule in the church and that salvation came by Christ alone through faith alone. Even when very frail and near to death he insisted on being carried to his pulpit to preach. Millions of presbyterians world-wide owe a great debt of gratitude for his life and work. He was, by far, the most important and influential reformation preacher. By him was laid the foundations for presbyterianism. The quieter Calvin, whom Knox worked with for a time, wrote voluminously. Tracts, treatises, volumes of sermons and theological works which have, under God, benefitted the church tremendously. Knox on the other hand wrote, comparitively little by way of biblical exposition but his influence was colossal. His bold approach and tenacity in seeing the work done, encouraging godly men on the one hand and fearlessly 'chopping at the root of corruption' on the other, epitomised his entire life.
